A 10 year old boy has become another casualty in the ongoing fracas between policemen and commercial drivers at the Ipaja-Command area of Lagos State. Already, one driver was killed and his body deposited in front of Meiran Police Station.

A resident of the White House bus stop in the area was in tears as she narrated to Gavel International, how the young boy was carried on top of a tricycle in front of the shop towards the police station.

Already, men of the Rapid Response Squad of the police force have been drafted to the area by the state police command. In its social media platform, RRS stated: “Meiran Crisis Commander Area P joined by reinforcement from RRS and sister divisions are on ground restoring normalcy in Meiran after violent protest over the death of a Keke NAPEP driver early this morning”.

However, it is not clear if RRS intervention will not lead to more casualties as residents report sporadic shooting in the area, particularly at White House area. Residents are warning family members not to come to White House area as police shooting is still going on.

Gavel Investigations reveals that the conflict has already led to the death of one policeman and one commercial driver. Eyewitness account said that there was an alleged altercation between the policeman and the driver over N100 tip. The policeman allegedly shot the driver.

The other drivers were enraged. They allegedly captured the policeman and killed him.

This happened at the Command Bus Stop, where the Nigerian Army Secondary School is located. The bus stop is a very congested area that people call a disaster waiting to happen.

The policemen of Meiran Divisional Police Station located in the area mobilized and have put the entire area under siege, shooting sporadically and frightening the residents. As at the time of filing these reports, our correspondent who was on phone with a resident could hear constant and repeated gunshots allegedly coming from the White House Bus Stop.

Scared residents and shop owners have closed up to avoid being victims of accidental discharge. Residents said the policemen came into the area with a truck and are picking up and arresting people in sight.
