The Eti-Osa Bar Forum has commenced the distribution of Palliatives to members of the Forum.
In a statement issued by Yakubu Eleto, the Publicity Secretary of the Forum, the Special Taskforce Committee against the Spread of Coronavirus constituted by the Forum received donations of 25 facemasks , 100 gloves and 25 bags of 5kg of rice from Dove Hospitals Limited, a private medical institution partnering with the Taskforce in its activities.
The Forum is targeting young lawyers and vulnerable members of the Forum in the distribution of the Palliatives.
Arising from the Online Executive Committee Meeting of the Forum, the Forum has resolved on Membership Drive with Google Forms which have been uploaded on the social media platform of the Forum.
The Membership Form is being utilised to reach out to needy and vulnerable members of the Forum . All members interested in being a beneficiary of the Palliatives are enjoined to fill the Membership Forms accordingly.
In a related development, the Forum has launched an Eti-Osa Bar Palliatives and Welfare Fund and it is appealing to well-meaning members of the society to contribute in cash or kind to the Fund. Such contribution can be made physically at the Eti-Osa Bar Forum Secretariat, Suite 17, Amabec Plaza, Addo Road, Beside Eti-Osa High Court Building, Addo Road, Ajah, Lagos State or by WhatsApp, 09097933015.
The Forum has also called on the Federal Government to set up a National Taskforce against COV-19. This was part of the Resolutions reached under the Session of the Online Executive Committee Meeting on the State of the Nation. The session observed the fact that the Presidential Task Force is inadequate in combating all the challenges thrown up by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The session was of the view that a National Taskforce against COVID-19 made up of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum , the Representatives of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria, leadership of the National and States’ House of Assembly, the leadership of the labour centres, organised private sector and professional Associations including but not limited to the Nigerian Medical Association and the Nigerian Bar Association , to be headed by the President and Vice-President respectively , which will from time to time report directly to the public and subject to regular rigorous questioning from t press and the public .
The session warned that in the absence of such a scientific and rigorous approach to combating the pandemic, the Nation risks an escalation of the curve with the regime of nationwide relaxed lockdown that will come into effect as from Monday, 4th May, 2020.
The session also called for the release of the protesting casual workers of Dangote Refinery Limited at Idasho, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, under the jurisdiction of the Eti-Osa Bar Forum youth of the Community for protesting the working conditions at the construction site of the Refinery.
The meeting observed the state of the Lagos State Judiciary with the signing of the New Practice Direction on Remote Hearing of Cases by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Honourable Justice Kazeem Alogba. The meeting also observed the appointment of new Judges into the High Court of Lagos State.
The meeting congratulated the new Judges on their recent appointment. The meeting appealed to the Chief Judge of Lagos State to set machinery in motion for the commencement of adjudication of cases at the Eti-Osa High Court Building by assigning Judges , upon their swearing-in by the Governor of Lagos State.
It will be recalled that the Eti-Osa Bar Forum has earlier written the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu an Open Letter urging the Lagos State Government to handover the building to the Lagos State Judiciary for commencement of remote hearing of cases.
In a bid to make the new regime of virtual hearing of cases available to ordinary lawyers , the Forum has kick-started an Eti-Osa Bar Virtual Workstation Fundraising to upgrade its Secretariat to a virtual workstation that can be utilised by all members of the Forum that has duly paid their dues.
The meeting also approved the regime of Monthly dues as follows :
1-7 years post call- N500
8-10- N1,000
10-15 -N1,500
15 years post call- N2,000
The meeting resolved that pending the completion of the official account of the Forum, the payment of the dues should be made to the Treasurer of the Forum, Omoya Folake with Union Bank Account Number 0037697278.
The meeting also agreed to adopt Oladotun Hassan Esq, the Chairman of the Branch as the candidate of the Forum for the national office of the National Assistant Publicity Secretary come the national elections of the Nigerian Bar Association come July 4, 2020.
