An Ikeja High Court on Monday remanded a boat owner, Elebiju Happiness in prison custody on manslaughter charges over a mishap that occurred around the waterfront community of Ilashe in July 2020.
Elebiju was arraigned on a 10 coumt charge bothering on involuntary manslaughter contrary to section 224 and punishable under 229 of the criminal laws of Lagos state 2015
Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution(DPP), Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi told the court that Elebiju’s carried more passangers than the capacity of the boat, thereby causing it capsize. She also disclosed other illegal activities of boat operators.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty after the chages was read to him in open court.
After the plea, Mrs Adeyemi requested the defendant be remanded in the prison custody and also asked for a trial date
She also informed the court that the prosecution have 13 witnesses to call but two witnesses would be ready to testify against the defendant on the next adjourned date
Justice Josephine Oyefeso adjourned till August 27, 2020 for commencement of trial and ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison custody.
