A Linguistics and African Languages student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Heritage Ajibola, who was an occupant of Bver Hostel in Maintenance OAU, has been confirmed dead after she accidentally fell into a sewage pit in the hostel today, February 9, 2022.
It was reported that the victim had gone to the back of the hostel to spread clothes her clothes, and then stepped on the plank which unknown to her, was used by the Hostel Management to cover the sewage tank, and she unfortunately fell and sank into the sewage pit. Further enquiries revealed that she had been in the pit for more than 20 minutes before a proper rescue team was made available, and prior to this, her friends and few people in the area tried using buckets to take out some of the waste water, in a bid to bring the victim to the surface, all to no avail. By the time the rescue team came around, reports showed that it took an extra hour before the victim was finally brought out of the pit.
In the aftermath of this sad occurrence and loss of the victim, students and occupants said they hostel had complained about how the Bver hostel did not do proper maintenance of the hostel, and has repeatedly neglected the hostel despite the high amount being paid by students for accommodation.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eyitayo Ogunbodede, also paid a sympathy visit to the hostel, and stated that the Management of the Hostel would be issued a query for their negligence in the event that occurred.
However, the management of OAU Students’ Union, in a press release on occurrence, stated that the victim’s death was absolutely avoidable, and has immediately demanded for justice for the family of the victim, Miss Heritage, with a view to forestalling any future reoccurrence of this tragedy.
