52 Dead from Devastating Floods in Bangladesh
Dhaka, Aug. 29, 2024 (TheGavel) — The death toll from severe floods in southeastern Bangladesh has risen to 52 as of Thursday, with new fatalities reported.
The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry’s latest update indicates that 21 additional deaths were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the total number of flood-related deaths to 52. The casualties include 14 in Cumilla, 17 in Feni, and six in Chattogram, along with three in Cox’s Bazar, eight in Noakhali, and one each in Brahmanbaria, Lakshmipur, Khagrachhari, and Moulvibazar.
The floods have affected over 5 million people across 11 of the country’s 64 districts, causing extensive damage to lives, property, and crops. More than half a million displaced individuals, including women and children, are currently sheltered in 3,403 relief centers.
The catastrophic floods, exacerbated by seasonal rains and a sudden influx of water from the Indian hills, have left over one million people stranded in several southeastern and northeastern districts.
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus of the interim government has called for immediate action to rescue stranded individuals, provide emergency medical care, and offer support to the victims. Disaster response teams have been deployed to carry out rescue operations, distribute relief supplies, and oversee the shelters for flood survivors. (Xinhua/NAN)
