TheGavel: The Nigeria Police Force has detained 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ite group, for prosecution following a clash with the group in Abuja on Sunday.
The clash resulted in the death of two policemen and left three others with serious injuries. Additionally, three patrol vehicles were set ablaze by the Shiites during the incident.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, credible intelligence reports aided police operatives in apprehending the detained suspects. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has directed that those involved in the attack be brought to justice.
The I-G has reaffirmed the force’s determination to resist anarchy and unrest, maintaining law and order nationwide. He condemned the unprovoked killings of police officers, stating that those responsible have “murdered peace.”
The police spokesman noted that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the attack and prevent future violence against police officers. The inspector-general sympathized with the families of the fallen officers and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The police called on the public to support their efforts to maintain law and order amidst extremist threats and violent crimes. (NAN)
