Abuja, August 27, 2024 (TheGavel) — Nigeria has received a significant boost in its battle against Mpox with the arrival of 10,000 JYNNEOS® vaccines, courtesy of the U.S. Government.
This donation marks a pivotal advancement in Nigeria’s public health response, particularly targeting high-risk areas affected by the viral disease Mpox. The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, emphasized that the JYNNEOS® vaccine, which is specifically approved for Mpox prevention, will be distributed nationwide, with a focus on regions experiencing the highest case numbers.
Mpox, previously known as Monkeypox, has been a persistent challenge in Nigeria. Although historically managed through sporadic interventions, the current outbreak has intensified the need for a robust response.
Mills highlighted that the donation aligns with the efforts of global health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), which are working diligently to control outbreaks and prevent further transmission.
“This generous donation of JYNNEOS Mpox vaccines underscores the strong partnership between Nigeria and the United States in advancing public health,” Mills stated. “These vaccines will play a crucial role in safeguarding our population, especially in high-risk areas where Mpox poses a serious health threat.”
Amid rising global Mpox cases, Mills noted the importance of timely interventions and emphasized that this donation forms part of a broader effort to enhance global health security.
Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to managing health risks. He highlighted the importance of treatment access, diagnosis, and post-vaccine care, urging continued commitment from all stakeholders to address Mpox effectively.
“We must ensure that individuals at risk have access to essential services and address gaps in our current health strategies,” Mulombo said, appreciating the U.S. Government’s support and recognizing Nigeria’s leadership in advancing health initiatives.
UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Christian Munduate, praised the U.S. Government for its steadfast support. She emphasized the critical role of primary health care in outbreak response and the need to strengthen healthcare systems at local levels.
“It’s essential that we work closely with primary health care entities to ensure rapid and effective responses, particularly for vulnerable populations,” Munduate noted. “These vaccines are crucial for protecting frontline workers and ensuring they are shielded as they work to combat the virus.”
In his welcome address, Prof. Ali Mohammed Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, expressed profound gratitude for the international community’s support. He highlighted the collaborative efforts to address Nigeria’s public health challenges and transform the health sector.
“I extend our sincere thanks to our development partners for their vital contributions in meeting healthcare needs and supporting our public health initiatives,” Pate said.
Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director of NPHCDA, assured that the vaccines would be prioritized for healthcare workers, frontline responders, and high-risk populations. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and follow preventive measures to halt the virus’s spread.
“Healthcare workers are advised to stay alert, isolate suspected cases promptly, and notify public health authorities to prevent further transmission,” Aina stated.

The JYNNEOS® vaccine, a third-generation vaccine licensed for the prevention of smallpox and Mpox, is recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for those at risk of orthopoxvirus infections. JYNNEOS, also known as Imvamune® or Imvanex® internationally, is fully licensed in the U.S. for adults aged 18 and older and became commercially available on April 1, 2024. (NAN)
