Lagos, Nigeria(TheGavel) – A 37-year-old man, Samuel Jeremiah, appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to face charges of stealing over 250 bags of sachet water and a Ford Transit bus.
During the court proceedings, Jeremiah revealed that he had gained valuable insights while in custody at the correctional facility. He stated, “I learned invaluable lessons during my remand in the correctional facility.” When asked to elaborate, he mentioned that he had realized the negative consequences of stealing and the pain it can cause to others. Additionally, he expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that stealing is against God’s teachings.
Jeremiah also shared that he had acquired new skills during his time in custody, learning how to make shoes. He expressed his intention to pursue this newfound skill seriously.
However, the trial was temporarily halted due to the absence of the prosecution witness. As a result, the court struck out the case for lack of diligent prosecution. The defendant was initially arraigned on July 11, 2023, and had initially pleaded guilty to the charges. However, he later changed his plea to not guilty and was granted bail.
The alleged theft occurred on May 28, 2022, when Jeremiah, as the driver of the Ford Transit bus, conspired with others to steal the vehicle and its cargo. The stolen items were valued at N1.8 million for the bus and N50,000 for the sachet water, belonging to Grace Womi. The offenses are said to have violated Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.(NAN)
