Abuja, Sept. 24, 2024 (TheGavel) – A coalition of 51 accredited observer organizations has called for the prosecution of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for allegedly declaring the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate as the winner of the Edo State governorship election. This demand was made during a news conference held in Abuja on Tuesday by the Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness.
Dr. Gabriel Nwambu, Director-General of the center, emphasized the need for legal action against Fintiri once his immunity expires. He stated, “We are compelled to address a severe violation that occurred post-election. The Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Ahmadu Fintiri, held a news conference declaring the candidate of his party as the winner of the Edo State governorship election. This action blatantly contravenes Sections 178 and 179 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and undermines the authority of INEC.”
Nwambu criticized Fintiri’s actions as “unbecoming of a public office holder” that could erode public trust in democratic processes. He stated, “We strongly recommend that Mr. Fintiri be held accountable for usurping the powers of INEC, and appropriate legal actions should be taken. He has to be prosecuted in 2027 as the immunity is lifted.”
The coalition’s observations included reports of vote-buying in several polling units, which they described as more sophisticated than in previous elections. They also highlighted an incident where military personnel denied access to accredited observers despite proper identification.
Despite these challenges, Nwambu noted that INEC should strive for a transparent and credible conduct of future elections. He expressed relief that the election concluded without violence, saying, “We were relieved to report that the election concluded without violence, despite the inflammatory remarks made by some politicians, including the outgoing governor, who referred to the election as a ‘do or die’ affair.”
The coalition praised the meticulous collation of results, which adhered to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 (Amended) and the 1999 Constitution. Nwambu stated, “We as 51 INEC-accredited observer organizations hereby unequivocally declare that the election was transparent, free, fair, and credible. Importantly, we report no loss of life on election day, which reflects positively on the overall conduct.”
He also recommended further investigations into logistical failures, including the lack of police escorts and delays caused by transport workers. “In certain RAC centres, electoral materials and staff were prepared for movement but lacked police escorts. Although these instances were minimal, they warrant attention.”
Nwambu commended the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police for the professionalism exhibited by officers during the election, as well as INEC for overseeing a credible process. He also praised the people of Edo for their peaceful disposition, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to peace. (NAN)
