TheGavel | Katsina, Sept. 25, 2024 – In a bid to foster unity and peace, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Katsina State Command, embarked on a street walk through various parts of Katsina on Tuesday. The initiative, which was part of the celebrations for the 2024 International Day of Peace, aimed to promote peaceful coexistence among residents and raise awareness about the importance of peace in the community.
The International Day of Peace, celebrated annually on Sept. 21, carried the theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” for the 2024 edition. The NSCDC’s street walk was one of several activities organized to emphasize this theme and underscore the role of peace in ensuring stability and development across the country.
Addressing participants and the public, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC Katsina State Command, DSC Buhari Hamisu, explained the significance of the peace walk, noting that it was organized to encourage the public to embrace peace in their daily interactions. “The exercise is aimed at encouraging people to live peacefully with one another,” Hamisu said.
During the walk, NSCDC personnel engaged with members of the public, preaching the message of peace and sharing various practices to promote harmony within communities. The walk not only focused on conflict prevention but also advocated for dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes.
Hamisu highlighted that the NSCDC Amendment Act of 2007 has empowered the corps to mediate in disputes involving willing parties. He revealed that the command’s Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit, along with its divisions and outposts, has successfully resolved numerous conflicts, ranging from interpersonal disputes to marital disagreements and clashes between farmers and herders.
“With this, the Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit of the command has mitigated a number of conflicts, ranging from interpersonal, marital, and farmers/herders clashes. This has significantly promoted peace, allowing many people to resume their normal activities and businesses,” Hamisu said.
Hamisu also noted that the leadership of the NSCDC, under its Commandant-General, Dr. Abubakar Audi, has intensified efforts to promote peace, security, and safety within the state and nationwide. According to Hamisu, new strategies have been adopted to improve the corps’ conflict resolution efforts, and personnel have received vocational training aimed at enhancing their confidence and professionalism in conflict management.
Many officers have been trained in the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanism, which Hamisu described as one of the corps’ most successful approaches in promoting peace. “The corps has achieved a lot of success in promoting peace through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanism,” he remarked.
In addition to its peace initiatives, Hamisu emphasized that the NSCDC remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of the people in Katsina and beyond. He reaffirmed the corps’ dedication to fostering an environment where disputes are resolved amicably and communities can thrive in peace. (NAN)
