62-Year-Old Man Arraigned for Theft and Illegal Gun Possession

Ibadan, Nigeria (TheGavel) – A 62-year-old man, Samson Okeleye, was brought before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Friday, September 27, 2024, on charges of conspiracy, theft, and illegal possession of a firearm. The defendant is accused of stealing a Tecno phone worth N23,000 and terrorizing a family while armed with a gun and cutlasses.

According to the prosecution, Inspector Oladejo Balogun, Okeleye and his accomplices conspired to commit the crimes on August 21, 2024, in Lagaye village, Eruwa, Oyo State. The defendant allegedly stole a Tecno phone and a wood-cutting machine from Muritala Hamzat, a farmer, and also stole N50,000 in cash from Hamzat’s brother, Rilwan Hamzat.

The charges against Okeleye, which contravene Sections 517, 390(9), and 80 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000, carry a potential prison sentence of up to seven years if found guilty.

Magistrate Mrs. Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum. The case has been adjourned until November 11, 2024, for a substantive hearing. (NAN)
