Lagos, Oct. 11, 2024 (TheGavel) — Kehinde Olaide, the Lawmaker representing Alimosho Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, distributed a total of N50 million to 500 constituents in the Igando and Ikotun areas on Friday. This initiative took place during the ninth edition of the House of Assembly Town Hall Meeting held at the Igando/Ikotun Multi-Purpose Hall.
The theme for this year’s meeting was “Ensuring Food Security for a Sustainable Future: Youth Participation and Home Grown Farming.” Each of the 500 beneficiaries received N100,000, with Olaide encouraging them to use the funds for meaningful ventures that would promote economic prosperity for themselves and their families.
“Today, we are giving 500 individuals N100,000 each to cushion the effect of the economic hardship in the country,” Olaide stated. He expressed optimism that if even 200 of the beneficiaries effectively utilized the funds, it could significantly boost the local economy. “I expect that by next year, they will come and testify to what they have been able to achieve with the money,” he added.
Beneficiaries were selected by leaders from various associations and groups within the constituency. Olaide commended Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, for sustaining the town hall meetings that have been held for the past decade.
During the meeting, Olaide urged the youth to engage in domestic farming, emphasizing that food security could be achieved through farming practices within limited spaces in Lagos. He encouraged community members to cultivate crops and raise animals, stating that this would help reduce dependency on food imports.
In addition to agricultural advice, Olaide encouraged students in the community to strive for excellence in their West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), promising scholarships for outstanding students pursuing tertiary education.
Olaide engaged agricultural professionals to educate attendees about the potential benefits of domestic farming, reinforcing that individuals can grow staples such as yams and peppers within their households.
Mr. Lasisi Akinsanya, Chairman of the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), commended the lawmaker for his generous initiative, describing it as impactful and crucial for alleviating the effects of economic hardship in the constituency.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support. Ireoluwa Akani, one of the recipients, was thrilled to receive her N100,000 bank alert during the meeting, planning to invest it in her tailoring business. Mustapha Hakeem, who was still awaiting his funds, expressed optimism about investing in his wife’s haircare business.
In addressing security concerns, CSP Kabiru Suleiman, the Divisional Police Officer for Igando, urged residents to report any irregularities promptly. “Whenever you see something, say it. I also advise every household to have a whistle to create a prompt alarm whenever the need arises,” he advised.(NAN)
