Abuja, Oct. 15, 2024 (TheGavel) — The Nigeria Police Force has refuted recent media reports alleging that its officers were forcefully removed from the Falomo Barracks in Lagos State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that these reports are inaccurate and the situation has been misrepresented. The clarification followed a wave of misinformation circulating in certain sections of the media regarding the ongoing reconstruction of the Falomo Police Barracks.
Adejobi explained that the barracks, which had long fallen into disrepair, is undergoing a complete redesign and reconstruction to provide modern, habitable living quarters for police officers. The redevelopment project, initiated during the tenure of former Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali, is being undertaken in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and private sector partners through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Adejobi further noted that the current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, remains committed to improving officers’ living conditions, having convened the first-ever Nigeria Police Force Housing Summit in April. The summit brought together key stakeholders to chart a sustainable course for enhancing police welfare, with a primary focus on housing.
“A nationwide assessment revealed that less than 25 per cent of police personnel have access to adequate barracks accommodations, with 90 per cent of existing barracks in a state of severe disrepair. Many of these structures are dangerously unsafe, posing a clear risk to occupants,” Adejobi stated.
He emphasized that the urgent reconstruction of the Falomo Barracks is part of a broader initiative to address these critical issues and ensure the safety and well-being of police personnel, in line with international best practices.
Addressing concerns about the displacement of officers, Adejobi confirmed that all residents of the barracks were given sufficient notice before the commencement of the reconstruction project. In addition, each officer was provided with relocation assistance, including a compensation package of N2 million to help secure alternative housing. Furthermore, displaced officers will receive monthly rent allowances, consistent with the provisions for officers who do not reside in police barracks.
Once the reconstruction of the Falomo Barracks is complete, Adejobi assured that officers will be reallocated housing units, allowing for a smooth transition back to improved living conditions.
He urged the public to disregard any false narratives surrounding the reconstruction process and recognize the broader goal of enhancing police welfare. “The rebuilding of Falomo Barracks is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the force’s management to provide safe and decent housing for officers,” Adejobi concluded.(NAN)
