The tragic finality of a broken marriage laid bare the deep emotional toll of divorce on Thursday, as Alhaji Dauda Dahiru, a prominent businessman, dragged his ex-wife, Rabi’atu Suleiman, before the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna over her painful refusal to vacate their former home two years after their separation.

​In a courtroom heavy with grief and unresolved conflict, counsel to the complainant, Hassan Sadisu, recounted the tragic undoing of a union once blessed with six children—five daughters and a son. The court heard how Suleiman was carrying their youngest child when the marriage collapsed. Out of compassion and respect for her condition, Dahiru permitted her to remain in the house until she gave birth.

However, two years after welcoming the infant, the former home has become a battleground of heartache. Sadisu revealed that Suleiman now refuses to leave, desperately clinging to the sanctuary where her family once flourished.

Anxious to move on, Dahiru pleaded with the court to compel her departure so he could finalize the sale of the property. He offered a olive branch, promising to pay rent for a new home for the sake of their innocent children.

Visibly distraught, Suleiman pleaded her own condition, insisting she would only leave if Dahiru purchased a one-bedroom flat for her or paid five full years of rent upfront—a desperate attempt to secure long-term stability for her shattered family.

Delivering a solemn ruling, the presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiyah Shehu, gently explained that while the law recognizes her plight as a mother, her legal demands lacked standing. He clarified that Dahiru’s duty lies solely in supporting and protecting the children’s well-being, not in fulfilling prolonged financial demands for an ex-spouse.

Ordering Suleiman to vacate the property immediately or face legal enforcement, the judge adjourned the case until September 8. In a final compassionate directive, Shehu ordered the heartbroken mother to present a newly found rental home to the court so her former husband could honor his promise to cover the lease.

As the session ended, the courtroom was left with the stark reminder that when love fades, it is often the lingering remnants of a shared past that prove hardest to surrender.
