Senator Adams Oshiomhole has dismissed former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his comments on the 2027 presidential election, saying he would not waste airtime discussing the former minister.
Oshiomhole made the remarks during an interview with TVC while reacting to Amaechi’s assessment of the political challenges facing President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the election.
Amaechi had argued that Tinubu faced stronger opposition in the South, while Atiku had fewer challengers because he was from the North.
“If you know Amaechi, you won’t waste airtime talking about him,” Oshiomhole said.
The former Edo State governor questioned Amaechi’s political consistency, citing his alleged dispute with Atiku over the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary.
Oshiomhole claimed that Amaechi had accused Atiku of emerging from a fraudulent primary and subsequently challenged his victory in court. He further alleged that Atiku later reached an agreement with Amaechi over the disputed mandate, adding that court documents were available to substantiate his claims.
The senator also referred to Amaechi’s emergence as Rivers State governor following a Supreme Court ruling and his subsequent appointment as Minister by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
According to Oshiomhole, these developments raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Amaechi’s political advancement and his record in electoral contests.
He also criticised Amaechi for allegedly describing other political figures as ethnic champions while portraying himself differently before the ADC primaries.
“He referred to Atiku as an ethnic champion. He referred to every other person as an ethnic champion. He was the only non-ethnic champion in the ADC before their primaries,” Oshiomhole said.
Oshiomhole questioned Amaechi’s credibility in commenting on leadership and politics in Nigeria, arguing that his criticisms of other political figures undermined his own position.
