Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has criticised film producers for repeatedly casting him in “Odogwu” roles, insisting that he should not be confined to a particular character type.
Arukwe made the remarks during an interview on The Creativitea Podcast, where he expressed frustration over producers’ preference for the character, which he said they believed would guarantee returns on their investments.
“All the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with Odogwu character. You can’t put me in a box,” the actor said.
He urged filmmakers to explore his versatility by creating different characters for him, arguing that the same willingness to take a chance on a role that helped boost his popularity could be extended to other roles.
“The same way someone took a chance on that character, you can also create another character and give to me,” Arukwe said.
The actor’s comments come after his manager, Mautin Tairu, popularly known as Mr M, admitted that he, too, had grown tired of Arukwe’s frequent “igbotic” roles.
Arukwe’s remarks highlight the challenges actors can face when a popular character becomes closely associated with their screen identity, potentially limiting opportunities to explore other roles and demonstrate their range.
