Paris, Sept. 6, 2024 (TheGavel) – Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has expressed his desire for the Nigerian national team to make a strong start in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, set to be held in Morocco.
Speaking in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, ahead of the team’s AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic’s Cheetahs in Uyo, Awoniyi emphasized the importance of a solid performance early in the competition.
“We understand how important it is to start strong, especially in a tournament like AFCON,” Awoniyi said. “We have what it takes to win every game in Africa, and it’s about putting everything together and playing with pride for the country.”
Awoniyi, who is making a return to the national team after a prolonged injury absence, sustained during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, expressed his happiness at being back with the team. He acknowledged that every player called up deserved their place in the squad and was prepared to give their all.
“I’m really excited to be back, and I know the rest of the squad feels the same way,” Awoniyi said. “It’s a great privilege to play for the Super Eagles, and every player called up is going to give their best for Nigeria.”
Despite his absence from regular club action due to injury, Awoniyi has been working his way back into Nottingham Forest’s starting lineup. He acknowledged the challenge of competing for a spot but remained confident in earning more playing time as he regains full fitness.
“At least I’m playing regularly now, and with that, I expect to see more playing time,” he said. “We have many quality players in the team, and everyone deserves a chance, but I’m focused on helping the team as much as I can.”
The Super Eagles will face Rwanda on Sept. 10 in Kigali for another crucial AFCON 2025 qualifying match. (NAN)
