Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi dies at 83

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, is dead.

According to available information, the monarch died at the Afe Babalola Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. He was 83 years old.

The Proprietor of ABTH, Chief Afe Babalola SAN is the Aare Bamofin of Yorubaland installed by the late Alaafin several years ago.

The monarch, who reigned for 52 years, haven been crowned on November 18, 1970. He succeeded Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu.

Sources close to the Oyo palace revealed that the late monarch had been ill and plans were underway to fly him abroad before he died at the Teaching Hospital. 

Alaafin Adeyemi was born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi on October 15, 1938 into the Alowolodu Royal House of the famous Oyo.

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, who will now lead Oyo town before a new Alaafin is installed.

His remains has already arrived the ancient Oyo town and may be buried today.
