Anambra govt shuts school over bullying

Awka, Aug. 27, 2024 (TheGavel) — The Anambra Government has announced the immediate closure of Upcoming Star International School on Ifite Road, Awka, following an incident of alleged bullying involving a seven-year-old pupil.

Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the state Commissioner for Education, revealed that the decision came after a report that the pupil was injured by a classmate, resulting in a broken leg.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that the school was operating without official approval. Prof. Chuma-Udeh noted that the school’s proprietor, Mr. Uchechukwu Onyeachonam, confirmed the incident occurred at the unregistered institution.

“Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the school to be sealed by 2 p.m. today,” Chuma-Udeh stated. “The existence of such unauthorized schools has been causing significant issues for children in the state.”

She warned that proprietors of illegal schools would face legal action for violating state regulations and urged parents to avoid sending their children to unapproved institutions. (NAN).
