Awka, Oct. 4, 2024 (TheGavel) – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra Command, has apprehended five suspected illegal private security guards for allegedly possessing three pump-action guns. Commandant Mr. Olatunde Maku revealed this information during a briefing with newsmen in Awka on Friday, indicating that the arrests were made on October 3.

The suspects were captured at an illegal roadblock located within the Nteje community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, following intelligence reports received by the NSCDC. According to Maku, the suspects were allegedly extorting money from motorists, thereby causing significant hardship to road users.

The arrested individuals include Ekene Erigaka, 27, from Imo State; Obiuto Eze, 42, from Abia State; Emeka Eze, 28; Prosper Ugoma, 20; and Victor Nnadi, 34, all from Anambra. They were apprehended by an NSCDC patrol team in collaboration with a private guard company and the Nteje Vigilante Group.

Maku emphasized the serious implications of such illegal checkpoints, noting that they could facilitate robberies, extortion, abductions, and even targeted killings of civilians and state actors. He expressed concern that these activities obstruct average citizens from pursuing their legitimate businesses and stressed the corps’ determination to eliminate all forms of crime and criminality in alignment with its mandate.
