The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja High Court in Lagos, to testify as a key prosecution witness in an alleged N1.4 billion oil subsidy fraud case against an oil company, Nadabo Energy.
EFCC had been on the case since 2015, prosecuting Nadabo Energy and its chairman, Abubakar Peters, for allegedly obtaining N1.4 billion from the Federal Government as oil subsidy using forged documents. Bawa investigated the case as an operative of the commission.
The defendants were accused of inflating the quantity of petrol purportedly supplied to the Federal Government to 14,000 metric tonnes.
At the resumption of trial on Tuesday, the lead EFCC prosecutor, Mr Seidu Attah told the court that it was ready to proceed with the examination of Mr Bawa. However, trial was stalled, as a result of the defendants’ counsel absence in court.
Justice Sedotan therefore adjourned the case to Wednesday(tomorrow) and warned that the defendants will have to defend themselves if their counsel fail to show up in court.
Bawa looking hale and hearty recounted his experience when he allegedly slumped at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He told reporters that he was merely dehydrated during the public event, last week. “You can see that I am hale and hearty”, he said, adding that he was back on his feet the same day that the incident happened.
