Portugal have reportedly named Bernardo Silva as the new captain of the national team following Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football on Thursday.
According to The Touchline, the decision was based on the national team’s captaincy criteria, which stipulate that the player with the most international appearances should lead the side.
Silva, who has made 115 appearances for Portugal and scored 14 goals, will take over the captain’s armband from Ronaldo ahead of the team’s future fixtures.
The Manchester City midfielder made his international debut in 2015 and has since established himself as one of Portugal’s key players.
He has also been part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His appointment marks a new chapter for the Portuguese national team following Ronaldo’s departure from international football.
