The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, on Friday, handed over cheques totalling N35,656,506.60 to the families of 17 police officers who died in active service.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the state police command, ASP Nahum Daso, this gesture is part of the Group Life Assurance Benefits and IGP Family Welfare Insurance Schemes—an intervention by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
The statement read in part: “During the presentation, the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, presented the cheques amounting to the sum of Thirty-five million, six hundred and fifty-six thousand, five hundred and six naira, six kobo (N35,656,506.60) to seventeen (17) next of kin and families of police officers who died while in active service and those who sustained injuries while discharging their mandate.”
CP Lawal expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police for the welfare package, which he described as a significant relief for the families of wounded and fallen officers.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the money efficiently for their well-being.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Abraham Lawrence appreciated the IGP and the entire police management for their continuous support since the demise of his father. He further assured that the funds would be used judiciously.
