Gwagwalada, FCT, Nigeria(TheGavel) – A 38-year-old businessman, Nuradeen Idris, found himself in legal hot water on Friday, October 25, 2024, as he was arraigned before a Gwagwalada Magistrates’ Court for allegedly impregnating a minor.

The police charged Idris, a resident of Old Kutunku Gwagwalada, Abuja, with the serious crime of precuration of a minor girl. The prosecution counsel, Dabo Yakubu, informed the court that the case was reported to the Gwagwalada police station on October 21 by the complainant, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, who is also from the same area.

According to Yakubu, the complainant discovered his daughter’s swollen stomach on October 14 and immediately took her to Gwagwalada clinic and maternity for a scan. The results of the scan revealed that the girl was 20 weeks pregnant.

During questioning, the minor girl disclosed that the accused, Nuradeen Idris, had been sexually assaulting her whenever her father was away from home. The prosecutor stated that the offense violated Section 275 of the Penal Code.

However, Idris pleaded not guilty to the charge. His defense counsel, Abubakar Usman, filed a bail application, urging the court to release his client on bail. Usman assured the court that Idris would not abscond if granted bail and cited Sections 158 and 159 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) to support his argument.

Magistrate Olatunji Oladunmoye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties were required to reside within the jurisdiction of the court and provide verifiable addresses.

The case has been adjourned until November 20, 2024, for further hearing.(NAN)
