Abuja, Sept. 23, 2024 (TheGavel) — The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) West Africa has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its management of the recent Edo off-cycle governorship election.
At a post-election observation news conference held on Monday in Abuja, Mr. Adele Jinadu, Chairman of CDD’s Election Analysis Centre, commended INEC’s efforts. He revealed that CDD deployed 70 accredited observers across 18 Local Government Areas to monitor the electoral process.
Jinadu noted that the observers reported positively on the availability and efficiency of INEC’s Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines. “The BVAS and iReV Technology efficiently carried out accreditation and were used in virtually all polling units in a timely manner,” he stated.
Despite the positive feedback, Jinadu highlighted some challenges, including a malfunction in Esan North-East where the BVAS was not functioning properly. He also mentioned issues such as slow uploads, blurry image captures, and instances of over-voting.
While commending INEC’s overall conduct, Jinadu recommended improvements in crisis communication to enhance voter confidence and combat disinformation. He further advocated for increased voter education and collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to address weather-related challenges during elections.
Jinadu concluded by commending the electorate for their calm and peaceful conduct during the polls. (NAN)
