A High Court in Minna, Niger State has sentenced Abubakar Muhammad-Buba to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of killing his father. Muhammad-Buba was arraigned on October 9, 2023, on charges including murder and theft.
The Korokpa police unit in Chanchaga village arrested Muhammad-Buba when he attempted to collect money from the sale of his father’s land. According to court proceedings, Muhammad-Buba stabbed his father to death, dismembered the body, and disposed of the remains near the Tagwai Dam in Chanchaga.
Muhammad-Buba then informed his father’s associate, Naje Mohammed SD Mambo, that his father had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom. After receiving the ransom money, he further claimed that the kidnappers had released his father, but he was injured and needed treatment at Gwagwalada hospital.
Mambo later discovered the deception and reported Muhammad-Buba to the police. The presiding judge, Mohammed S.A. Mohammed, sentenced Muhammad-Buba to life imprisonment, noting the prosecution had established his guilt. The judge stated that, given the severity of the crime, he could have imposed the death penalty but opted for life imprisonment as an act of leniency.
