Lagos, September 17, 2024(TheGavel) – Descendants of the late King Kosoko, the 10th king and first Oloja of Lagos, gathered to commemorate the 162nd anniversary of his triumphant return to the city after a decade-long exile. The week-long celebration culminated in a grand finale at the palace of the Oloja of Lagos elect, Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko.
The event, aptly titled “The Return 1862,” marked the historic homecoming of King Kosoko and his followers in 1862, which led to the establishment of the Epetedo settlement and the Ereko palace. The king’s exile followed the bombardment of Lagos by the British Royal Navy in 1851, forcing him to flee to Epe.
The celebration featured a colorful array of traditional ceremonies, including the recitation of family panegyrics by professional chanters. Up-and-coming artists also showcased their talents in various musical genres, including Ijo real, Ajeh, Akewi Agbaye, and K-Man.
Olojo-Kosoko, the Oloja elect, expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the program. He emphasized the importance of promoting the historical relevance and legacy of King Kosoko, as it can inspire younger generations to live a life worthy of emulation.
Alhaja Tawakalitu Abiola-Sulaimon, one of King Kosoko’s descendants, commended the Oloja elect for his transformational initiative in upholding the late king’s legacy and history. She noted that this had fostered peace, unity, and progress among all King Kosoko descendants.
Before the appointment of the current Oloja elect, the descendants were not united. Abiola-Kosoko’s laudable programs, such as the establishment of a museum to preserve King Kosoko’s war relics, have played a crucial role in bringing the descendants together.
Mr. Abiodun Olojo-Kosoko also expressed his joy in witnessing this celebration during his lifetime. He emphasized the importance of preserving King Kosoko’s achievements and commended the Oloja elect for his efforts.
The celebration was graced by several dignitaries, including Oba Oladele Kosoko, the Oniworo of Iworo Kingdom in Badagry. The event served as a testament to the enduring legacy of King Kosoko and his continued influence on the Lagos community.(NAN)
