A young doctor, Marie-France Shogogo, has died after contracting the Ebola virus while treating patients in Beni, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Jean Kaseya, announced her death in a post on X.
Kaseya said Shogogo contracted the virus while providing medical care to Ebola patients in Beni, where she was among the frontline health workers responding to the outbreak.
Her death has renewed concerns about the safety of medical personnel working to contain the spread of the deadly virus, particularly those providing direct care to infected patients.
Beni, a city in eastern DRC, is among the areas affected by Ebola outbreaks in recent years, with several cases and deaths recorded.
Shogogo’s death highlights the risks faced by healthcare workers on the frontline of the outbreak as efforts continue to contain the disease and prevent further transmission.
