Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has reinstated the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Samson Osagie, following his suspension over alleged financial infractions. The decision, effective immediately, was announced in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor, dated March 12.

Osagie, along with Damian Lawani, Chairman of the State Local Government Commission, had been suspended in February pending an investigation into allegations of financial misconduct. However, the investigative panel set up by the state government has now cleared Osagie of any wrongdoing.

The letter from the SSG stated, “Having considered the report of the investigative panel set up by the government to investigate financial infractions against you, which has exonerated you completely, I write to convey the directive of the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, that you resume duties as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice immediately.”

Reacting to his reinstatement, Osagie expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for his fairness and commitment to the state’s progress. “This clearly shows that His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has the best interests of Edo State at heart,” Osagie said. He reaffirmed his loyalty to the administration and pledged to continue working towards the state’s development.

“I remain dedicated to supporting the governor in ensuring Edo State regains its rightful place among the leading states in Nigeria,” he added.

The suspension and eventual reinstatement of a high-ranking official like the Attorney General highlights the critical role of due process in ensuring accountability within government. Nigerian law requires that public officials accused of misconduct must be given a fair hearing before any disciplinary action is taken.

According to the Nigerian Constitution and Public Service Rules, no government official can be permanently dismissed or sanctioned without a thorough investigation and the opportunity to address the allegations against them. In this instance, the findings of the investigative panel ensured that Samson Osagie was treated fairly and no unjust action was taken.

The reinstatement also brings to light the governor’s authority in managing state affairs, particularly when it comes to appointing or suspending commissioners. This case sets an important example for addressing similar situations in governance.
