The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 59 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud. The arrests took place on Monday in the Abacha Road, Mararaba axis of Nasarawa, Abuja.
According to a statement issued by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesman, the suspects were detained following credible intelligence regarding their involvement in fraudulent online activities. The operation led to the recovery of 73 mobile phones of various brands.
Oyewale stated that the suspects would soon face charges in court. “The EFCC operatives acted on solid intelligence, resulting in the arrest of 59 individuals involved in internet fraud. We also recovered 73 phones, which are crucial to the ongoing investigation,” he said.
The EFCC has been intensifying efforts to combat internet fraud, a growing concern in Nigeria. The agency has been working tirelessly to track down and apprehend individuals engaged in cybercrime to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
The crackdown on internet fraudsters underscores the EFCC’s commitment to eradicating financial crimes and upholding the rule of law. As the suspects prepare to face the judicial system, the agency’s actions serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities.
Internet fraud is a serious crime with significant penalties. The Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, criminalizes various types of online fraud, with punishments ranging from 7 to 25 years in prison, depending on the severity of the offense.
The Act targets crimes like hacking, identity theft, phishing, and financial scams. It gives law enforcement agencies, like the EFCC, the power to seize electronic devices, trace digital footprints, and use electronic evidence in court.
For cases involving multiple suspects, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) ensures thorough and fair investigations, with suspects having the right to legal representation. However, for those found guilty, the penalties are meant to deter others from engaging in cybercrime.
The EFCC’s recent raid in Mararaba is part of its efforts to crack down on internet fraud, sending a strong message that such activities will not be tolerated. This is in line with Nigeria’s goal to create a safer digital environment, attract foreign investment, and improve the country’s global reputation.
