Abuja, Nigeria(TheGavel)– In a significant move to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Eid-el-Maulud), the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has launched a nationwide tree planting campaign. The initiative, dubbed “Project Make It Green,” aims to promote environmental sustainability and contribute to a greener Nigeria.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah, Sheikh Fuad Adeyemi, revealed that the Society would be planting over 1,000 soursop trees across the country. The campaign kicked off in Abuja on Sunday.
Sheikh Adeyemi emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, citing the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. He explained that the Prophet’s emphasis on tree planting aligns with the Society’s commitment to a greener future. “As we celebrate Eid-el-Maulud, we want to highlight the Prophet’s messages and his teachings on environmental sustainability,” he stated.
The choice of soursop trees for the campaign is strategic. According to Sheikh Adeyemi, the soursop tree has medicinal properties that can contribute to the well-being of the community. The fruit is also highly valued for its nutritional content.
The nationwide tree planting campaign is expected to have a significant impact on addressing environmental challenges such as climate change and deforestation. By planting trees, the Society aims to contribute to the mitigation of natural disasters like the recent floods in Maiduguri.
Sheikh Adeyemi urged Nigerians to embrace the practice of tree planting, emphasizing its benefits for both the environment and the community. He highlighted the Sunnah (tradition) of the Prophet, which encourages tree planting as a means of earning continuous rewards in the afterlife.
“The Prophet mentioned that planting trees would be considered a ‘Sadakat-ud-Jariyya,’ a continuous charity that benefits both the planter and the community,” he explained. “The recent floods in Maiduguri serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of environmental neglect. Had we been more proactive and followed the Prophet’s teachings, such disasters could have been mitigated.”
The Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society’s tree planting campaign is a commendable initiative that aligns with the global efforts to protect the environment.
