An explosion rocked Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State on Tuesday throwing residents of the ancient city into panic.
The State government however in a statement urged the people to remain calm, saying that government and all security agencies are in full control of the situation.
The explosion according to sources in Ibadan occurred around Bodija, at the Ibadan Electricity feeder station not too far from the home of the late Chief Bola Ige SAN who was once Nigeria’s minister of mines and power.
Residents close to Bodija area said the bang may have affected electricity supply to the city. The police is yet to come out if there are casualties in the explosion. However, a security official who spoke to our reporter said no fewer than 10 people were killed.
A source narrated the explosion thus: “We heard a big bang. It was a loud explosion. Some houses were brought down. It took place around Bodija some minutes before 8pm on Tuesday night”
However, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, In a release urged the people to remain calm.
The statement reads: “Residents of Ibadan and immediate environ experienced an uncommon explosion about 8pm this evening.
There are various interpretations of the incident but it is important for us to state categorically that the state government has taken over and in the full control of the unfortunate occurrence in in order to mitigate the incident.
All security service chiefs including para military chiefs and Fire Operatives have been deployed by the governor to reign in the spillover from the explosion.
His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde therefore implores citizens to calm down and be rest assured that their interests are being looked after”.
