Federal Government and Sightsavers Provide Free Eye Health Services to NBS Staff

Abuja, Aug. 27, 2024 (TheGavel) — The Federal Government, in collaboration with Sightsavers Nigeria, conducted free eye screening and treatment for 400 staff members of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday.

Mr. Adeyemi Adeniran, Statistician-General/Chief Executive Officer of NBS, highlighted the significance of the initiative in identifying vision problems that could impact staff performance. He praised Sightsavers for their support and noted that the program aligns with the bureau’s commitment to staff welfare beyond traditional benefits like promotions and financial incentives.

“This initiative is part of our broader welfare strategy, which includes improving healthcare delivery for our staff,” Adeniran said. He emphasized that better vision would enhance productivity and performance, allowing staff to execute their tasks more effectively.

Dr. Joy Shu’aibu, Sightsavers Country Director, expressed pride in partnering with NBS for this initiative, reaffirming Sightsavers’ mission to prevent avoidable blindness and promote good eye health. She emphasized that quality eye care is crucial for both personal and professional growth.

Dr. Tochukwu Jamike, an optometrist with Sightsavers, highlighted the importance of regular eye check-ups to prevent conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and refractive errors. He stressed the need for routine examinations to avoid serious vision issues and improve overall eye health.

Mr. Sunday Ichedi, Director of Statistics, International Statistical Development Department at NBS, praised the program for its impact on data handling and accuracy. He shared his personal experience, noting that the eye care provided by Sightsavers significantly improved his vision and, consequently, his job performance.
