Abuja, Nigeria(TheGavel) – The Federal High Court (FHC) is set to resume its normal court sittings on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, following the conclusion of its annual vacation.
The vacation, which began on July 23, 2024, was initially scheduled to end on September 13. However, due to the public holiday declared by the Federal Government to celebrate Eid-el-Maulud, the resumption of court activities has been postponed by one day.
In a statement released on July 11, the FHC Assistant Director of Information/ICT, Dr. Catherine Oby-Christopher, announced the commencement of the court’s annual vacation. The vacation was authorized by the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, in accordance with Order 46, Rule 4 (d) of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019.
Dr. Christopher stated:
“By virtue of the provisions of Order 46, Rule 4 (d) of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Justice John Tsoho, announces its 2024 Annual Vacation and Roster for Vacation Judges.The vacation will commence from July 23 to Sept. 13, 2024, normal court sitting will resume on 16th September, 2024. This is in order for judges to enjoy their well- deserved rest and to prepare for the tasks and activities of the New Legal year.”
During the vacation period, the court established designated vacation courts in Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt to handle urgent matters. These vacation courts were staffed by specific judges appointed by the Chief Judge.
The resumption of court sittings on Tuesday marks the beginning of a new legal year for the Federal High Court. It is expected that the court will continue to handle a wide range of legal cases, including civil, commercial, and criminal matters.
The Federal High Court plays a crucial role in the Nigerian legal system, adjudicating on various disputes and enforcing the law. Its resumption of operations will provide litigants with the opportunity to seek justice and resolve their legal issues.(NAN)
