A former Chief Judge of Borno State, Justice Kaumi Mohammed Kolo is dead. He died on Sunday morning in Maiduguri. He was 82 years old.

Justice Kolo was born on July 17, 1939. He attended Gambaru and Bama Secondary Schools between 1949 and 1954; Borno Provisional Secondary School, 1955-61; Kano School for Arabic Studies; School of Oriental Studies, London, 1962-65.

He had his university education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1968-71; Nigerian Law School, Lagos, 1971-72.

He served as a Magistrate, 1972-82; and was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Borno State, 1982-85. He became the Chief Judge, Borno State, May 1985. He has been a member of the Body of Benchers  since 1985. After his retirement, Justice Kolo dedicated himself to farming and recitation of the Holy Quran.

An Abuja based senior lawyer, Joe Kyari Gadzama SAN described the late jurist as a honest, detribalized and hard working man.

He said: “I just received the sad news of the demise of Hon. Justice Kaumi Mohammed Kolo, a former Chief Judge of our State, Borno State. He was a very good man, he was there for all. I took silk when he was the CJ of my State in 1998. He stood for me from the very beginning to the end of the selection process and came to Abuja in person for my investiture at the Supreme Court.

I was with him in his Maiduguri house about a year ago to pay my respects to him. He was honest, detribalized and hardworking. I publicly testified on his integrity at a special court session on his retirement as CJ. A very good man indeed. I am saying this from my heart of hearts. He lived a fulfilled and impactful life and aged gracefully before passing on. His legacies are indelible.

May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. May his immediate family members and all of us be comforted. Amen”.
