Abuja, Oct. 17, 2024 (TheGavel) – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has extended its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, as well as the people and government of Jigawa State, following the tragic tanker explosion that claimed numerous lives.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating that the thoughts and prayers of the entire FRSC are with the affected families and residents of the state during this difficult time.
The tragic incident occurred in Majia, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded, killing at least 94 people who were attempting to scoop fuel from the overturned vehicle. Reports from local authorities now indicate that the death toll has risen to 147, with a mass burial already conducted for the victims.
In his remarks, Mohammed underscored the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations, especially in the aftermath of road accidents involving flammable substances. He urged road users and the general public to exercise extreme caution and wait for emergency services to handle situations involving hazardous materials.
“This unfortunate incident highlights the need for strict adherence to safety precautions at all times,” Mohammed said. “We advise the public to stay far away from any tanker accident sites, particularly when flammable products like petrol are involved, as they pose a high risk of fire and can lead to severe injuries or fatalities.”
Providing details on the crash, Mohammed explained that the fire was ignited when villagers rushed to collect fuel from a detached tanker of a DAF vehicle that had crashed on the road an hour earlier. The lone accident occurred when the driver of the tanker, attempting to avoid a speed bump at high speed, lost control, causing the tanker to detach from the body of the vehicle. The driver and conductor, fortunately, survived without injuries, but the detachment led to the catastrophic explosion.
The FRSC has launched an investigation into the crash and is working to ensure that tankers meet minimum safety standards before transporting flammable substances. Mohammed also issued immediate directives to Commanding Officers at various tank farms to expedite safety checks on tankers to prevent future occurrences.
“The FRSC is committed to preventing such tragedies and will intensify efforts to enforce safety standards for tanker operations,” he added.
In response to the tragedy, emergency services swiftly transported injured victims to Ringim General Hospital, Jahun General Hospital, and Khadija Clinic in Majia for urgent medical attention.
Shu’aibu Hambali, Chairman of Taura Local Government Area, confirmed the rising casualty count during a live interview on Arewa Radio. The community is now grappling with the immense loss, as the authorities continue to investigate the incident.(NAN)
