Abuja, Oct. 11, 2024 (TheGavel) — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for collaboration among stakeholders to improve traffic management, reduce road crashes, and promote road safety across Nigeria.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, stressed the need for collective efforts to ensure safer roads during the inauguration of the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NARSAC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The newly formed council includes six governors, key ministers, and other stakeholders, with a focus on reducing road fatalities nationwide.
Mohammed revealed that the FRSC had intensified campaigns in motor parks and public spaces, aiming to promote safer driving practices. He called for increased partnerships between commuters, transport unions, and authorities to prevent road crashes and guarantee safer journeys.
While road crashes have decreased, Mohammed noted that the numbers are still too high. “Commuters must not stay silent when drivers endanger lives by violating traffic rules,” he urged. The marshal emphasized that passengers could play a critical role in preventing accidents by speaking up when drivers engage in dangerous behavior, such as speeding or driving recklessly. Unfortunately, passengers often remain silent or are silenced by others, a behavior that needs to change.
“Life has no duplicate,” he reminded, encouraging proactive measures from all road users to reduce accidents. Mohammed also highlighted the role of transport unions in setting an example by preventing overloading and discouraging drivers from consuming alcohol or substances that impair their judgment.
Mohammed mentioned that road crashes had been steadily declining in the past month, but he stressed the importance of continued sensitization efforts. “We will regularly visit motor parks to discourage drivers from using alcohol or drugs and engage traditional and community leaders to educate their people on road safety.”
He urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to adhere to traffic rules, avoid overloading, and refrain from using phones while driving. These factors, according to Mohammed, are significant contributors to road safety challenges in Nigeria.
The inauguration of NARSAC represents a crucial step towards achieving the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) goals, which aim to reduce road crashes and fatalities. With the advisory council’s guidance, the FRSC hopes to enhance road design standards, promote non-motorized transport, and strengthen road safety frameworks across the country.
