Awka, Oct. 9, 2024 (TheGavel) – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra has called on road users to take personal responsibility for their safety to reduce the occurrence of road accidents. This appeal was made by the State Sector Commander, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, during an event held in Awka to commemorate the 37th Customers Service Week celebration.
The 2024 Customer Service Week, themed “Above and Beyond,” runs from October 7 to 11. The week is internationally recognized and serves to highlight the importance of customer service and those who deliver it.
In her address, Alexander emphasized that every motorist, as an adult, should be aware of traffic rules and the necessity of adhering to them without waiting for enforcement from FRSC officials.
“Every motorist is an adult who knows what is right or wrong and does not need enforcement from FRSC officials to do what is right,” she stated. “You see that when people travel to other countries, they obey the traffic rules, but when they are in Nigeria, they cannot apply the same. Why? It means people know what they are doing. FRSC will continue to create a safe motoring environment, but road users should understand that your safety is your absolute responsibility.”
Alexander highlighted the core functions of the FRSC, which include preventing or minimizing road traffic accidents, clearing road obstructions, and educating both motorists and the public on road safety measures. She explained that these functions are supplemented by patrol activities, prompt emergency response, rescue operations, and free safety checks—all of which have contributed to reducing accidents on Nigerian roads.
“We carry out patrol activities, respond promptly to road emergencies, conduct rescue operations, and offer free safety checks without enforcement. All these efforts have helped to reduce crashes on our roads,” she added.
In addition to these efforts, the FRSC has been actively involved in clearing the backlog of driver’s license production, recommending that state governments fix dangerous road spots, and partnering with relevant stakeholders to improve road safety and customer satisfaction.
During the event, the FRSC presented a commendation letter to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for its consistent media coverage of the agency’s activities in Anambra State.
Several FRSC staff members and stakeholders in the transportation sector were also recognized for their contributions to enhancing road safety and customer service. (NAN)
