Berlin, Oct. 2, 2024 (TheGavel) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has issued a stern warning regarding Iran’s recent military actions, emphasizing the growing risk of destabilization in the Middle East. Scholz’s comments came after Iran launched a barrage of missiles targeting Israel, further intensifying the conflict in the region.

In a statement published on Wednesday, Scholz expressed grave concern about the potential for the conflict to spiral out of control, saying, “Iran is risking setting the entire region on fire: This must be prevented at all costs.”

The German Chancellor highlighted the crucial role of Israel’s air defense systems and its allies in largely repelling the Iranian missile strikes on Tuesday evening. The successful interception of the attack, he noted, prevented further escalation and devastation.

Scholz also called on Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia in Lebanon, to cease its hostilities against Israel immediately. He urged Tehran to take responsibility for de-escalating the situation, emphasizing that continued aggression could have catastrophic consequences for the entire region.

The German government, according to Scholz, is committed to working alongside international partners to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. He stressed that halting the violence is a critical first step toward achieving long-term peace.

Scholz pointed to the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates Hezbollah’s withdrawal from the border area with Israel. “This will pave the way for the return of people to northern Israel and at the same time open up the prospect of consolidating Lebanon’s statehood,” Scholz stated.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with global leaders closely monitoring developments. Germany, along with other key international players, is pushing for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and ensure regional stability. (NAN)
