The House of Nigerian Journalism has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of the former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and Founder/Managing Editor of Eagle Online, Mr Dotun Oladipo.
Oladipo, who was aged 56, reportedly died on Tuesday in Lagos.
The tragic news was announced by the President of GOCOP, Mr Danlami Nmodu, mni, on the guild’s WhatsApp platform at 10:21 p.m. on Tuesday.
In a brief announcement titled “Very Sad Announcement”, Nmodu wrote: “Sad, very sad news. It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
Oladipo was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s accomplished practitioners of digital journalism, with about three decades of impactful experience in the profession.
As Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publishers of Eagle Online, he built a respected media organisation known for factual and real-time reporting, online television and data-driven journalism.
A consummate newshound with an impeccable nose for news, Oladipo was distinguished by his uncommon passion for journalism and his unwavering commitment to the pursuit of truth.
He began his journalism career in the traditional media, working at various times with Newswatch magazine, The Punch and the Nigerian Tribune.
Over the years, he made significant contributions to the growth and development of journalism in Nigeria, particularly at a time when the profession was undergoing a major transition from traditional to digital platforms.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Oladipo was admired for his humility, generosity and willingness to assist colleagues and younger journalists. His influence extended across generations, earning him the respect and affection of practitioners at different levels of the profession.
A member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), he remained deeply committed to the ideals of journalism and the responsibility of the media to inform the public and hold society to account.
His death has therefore left a profound void in Nigeria’s journalism community, coming at a time when his wealth of experience and contribution to the profession remained invaluable.
With his passing, Nigerian journalism has lost an iroko whose life and career were defined by excellence, integrity and an enduring passion for the truth.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire generations of journalists.
