Sokoto, Sept. 24, 2024 (TheGavel) – Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has issued a stern warning to the 23 newly elected local government council chairmen against truancy and corruption during their swearing-in ceremony. The governor emphasized the importance of active participation and accountability in local governance.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Abubakar Bawa, Aliyu advised the chairmen not to manage their councils from outside their jurisdictions. “Gone are the days when local government chairmen would abandon their domains for hotel rooms,” he stated. He further warned, “Any local government chairman found flouting these directives will be dealt with severely.”
The governor highlighted the necessity for the chairmen to hold regular meetings with local security agencies to devise effective strategies for addressing security challenges. “Remember that tackling security challenges is one of our 9-point Smart Agenda. So give security all the desired attention,” Aliyu stressed.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the state, Aliyu called upon communities to continue supporting and praying for the government. He also directed the chairmen to comply with the Code of Conduct Laws by declaring their assets immediately.
Additionally, the governor urged the chairmen to enhance their councils’ internally generated revenue to provide adequate social amenities for their constituents. He emphasized his administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, warning against unlawful expenditures of public funds.
At the event, the State Commissioner for Local Governments and Community Development, Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi-Adare, announced that an induction training would be organized to help the chairmen understand the operations of local government councils.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by notable figures including Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC Sokoto), Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Gobir, Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly Alhaji Tukur Bala, Deputy Speaker Kabir Ibrahim Kware, and other dignitaries.
On September 21, the Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), led by Chairman Alhaji Suleiman Aliyu, declared 23 APC candidates as winners in the local government elections and subsequently issued them Certificates of Return. (NAN)
