The enduring legacy of the Ikoli family will take centre stage on October 1 as the Bayelsa State Government honours two generations of the family at the state’s 30th anniversary celebration.
The government has approved the conferment of the Bayelsa State @30 Award on Chief Anthony George-Ikoli, SAN, former Attorney General of Bayelsa State and the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria produced by the state, in recognition of his distinguished service and contributions to the development of Bayelsa.
At the same ceremony, the state will posthumously honour his grandfather, Ernest Sisei Ikoli, one of Nigeria’s pioneering nationalists and journalists whose contributions to the struggle for independence and the development of journalism occupy an important place in the country’s history.
The twin recognition means that two generations of the Ikoli family will be celebrated at the same historic ceremony—one for a lifetime of public service and the other for a legacy that helped shape Nigeria’s nationalist movement and journalism.
The award ceremony is scheduled to hold at the Banquet Hall, Yenagoa, on October 1, 2026, beginning at 4 p.m.
The invitation to Chief George-Ikoli, signed by the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, conveyed the approval of the Executive Governor for his selection for the Bayelsa State @30 Award under the category of Distinguished Service and Contribution to Bayelsa State.
The letter congratulated the senior lawyer on the recognition and requested his presence at the ceremony in Yenagoa.
In a separate letter, the state government invited members of the Ernest Sisei Ikoli family to receive the posthumous award on behalf of the late nationalist and journalist.
According to the government, the posthumous honour recognises Ernest Ikoli’s contribution to journalism, adding another dimension to the family’s historic connection with public service and national development.
Ernest Sisei Ikoli was among the first generation of Nigerian nationalists who campaigned for self-government and independence from British colonial rule. He was also a pioneering journalist whose work contributed to the emergence of an indigenous Nigerian press and the growth of nationalist consciousness.
His grandson, Chief Anthony George-Ikoli, has in his own right carved out a distinguished career in law and public service. He became the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria produced by Bayelsa State and subsequently served as Attorney General of the state.
The decision to honour grandfather and grandson at the same anniversary celebration therefore places the Ikoli family’s contribution across generations in sharp focus—linking the nationalist journalism of the colonial era with contemporary legal and public service.
For the Ikoli family, the October 1 ceremony will not merely be an occasion for receiving awards. It will also represent a public affirmation of a legacy spanning generations, with the contributions of Ernest Sisei Ikoli and Chief Anthony George-Ikoli being recognised in their respective fields of journalism, law and public service.
