Ilorin, Oct. 2, 2024 (NAN) – A tenant, Giwa Lukman, was arraigned before the Area Court, Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, on Wednesday for allegedly failing to pay five months’ worth of rent.
The landlord, Ahmed Alade, informed the court that Lukman was expected to pay an annual rent of N200,000, with the next payment due in May 2024. However, Lukman had failed to make the payment over the past five months, despite repeated promises to do so.
Alade, frustrated by the tenant’s failure to fulfill his financial obligations, requested that the court order Lukman to vacate the apartment so that he could rent it out to a more reliable tenant.
In response, Lukman admitted to owing five months’ rent but pleaded for more time, explaining that his brother had promised to send him money by the end of October. He also requested that the court allow him to stay in the apartment until the end of November before moving out.
After considering the pleas, the Presiding Judge, Hammad Ajumonbi, ruled that Lukman must vacate the apartment by the end of November. The judge also ordered the tenant to pay the accumulated seven months’ rent by the end of October, including the rent for May and June.
