Twelve inmates early on Monday morning in a jailbreak escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate.” He assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, is taking immediate steps to prevent future occurrences.

According to Fanwo, security operatives have already re-arrested one of the escapees, while efforts are ongoing to recapture the others.

“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns,” Fanwo stated, suggesting that further investigation is necessary to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the jailbreak.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the remaining fugitives, with increased security presence across the state to prevent any potential threats to public safety. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

This incident marks another security breach at the Kotonkarfe correctional facility, which has witnessed similar jailbreaks in the past. The state government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening security measures within correctional centers to prevent future escapes.

As the search intensifies, security agencies have assured the public that no effort will be spared in ensuring that all escaped inmates are brought back into custody.
