Kaduna, Oct. 14, 2024 (TheGavel) – A Judge at the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna State, Malam Anas Khalifa, has announced plans to establish an independent legal centre in the state. The initiative, which will be named the “AK Center for Legal Education,” aims to provide comprehensive legal training and research opportunities, particularly focusing on Islamic law and its integration with Nigeria’s legal system.
Khalifa made this known during a courtesy visit to the Kaduna Zonal Office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He outlined that the centre would include classrooms, lecture halls, hostels, offices, a recreation hall, a mosque, a clinic, and a printing press.
“The centre will serve as a platform for in-depth research on the application of Shari’a law in the face of modern global challenges, especially within the framework of Nigeria’s legal system,” Khalifa said. “It will offer legal training programmes for judges—both new and experienced—lawyers, law students, and other legal practitioners.”
Khalifa further disclosed that the centre will be the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria, providing an independent space for continuous legal education. Planned activities include quarterly seminars for legal professionals, periodic Shari’a case law reporting, and the publication of Islamic law journals. The centre will also house a legal aid law firm focused on counseling and mediation, particularly for pre-marital, marital, and communal disputes.
In addition to its legal functions, the centre will feature daily mosque activities, offering lessons on the sources of Islamic law, including the Qur’an, Sunnah, Ijma’, and Maliki jurisprudence. Arabic language courses will also be available for students and the public.
Malam Bashir Rabe-Mani, Zonal Manager of NAN, praised the initiative, noting that the agency would offer its full support through relevant publications. “NAN has broad coverage across Nigeria and internationally, and we are ready to assist the AK Center for Legal Education in promoting justice and legal scholarship,” Rabe-Mani said.
The establishment of this legal centre is expected to enhance the dispensation of justice and provide critical legal resources for practitioners and the general public alike. (NAN)
