The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said that the devastating flood destroyed 14,496 farmlands across five local government areas of Kano State.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed Habib made the disclosure on Tuesday during a damage assessment tour of the affected communities in Warawa and Wudil Local Government Areas of the state.
He stated that 1,113 farms had been submerged at Warawa Gishiri-Wuya; 1,135 in Larabar Gadon-Sarki and 4,808 farms washed away in Wudil. The disaster also destroyed 1,405 farms in Bebeji; 260 in Rano and 5,775 others in Dawakin Kudu.
According to the Director-General, President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the agency to conduct immediate damage assessment exercises of the affected areas.

“We came for an assessment tour at Wudil, Gishiri Wuya and Larabar Gadon-Sarki but due to the nature of the road, we have to stop here. We can’t cross over, our cars are getting stuck.
“We will also conduct on-the-spot assessment tour in flood-affected communities across the country,” he said.
The DG said the agency would compile and submit a report of the exercise to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, noting that the Federal Government would intervene into the matter as soon as possible to support the victims and mitigate the effects of the disaster.
He also stated that NEMA will provide food and non-food items to the victims of the disaster.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary, Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Saleh Jili attributed the flood to released of excess water from Tiga Dam.
One of the victims, Malam Nasiru Qayya urged government at all levels to assist the victims to assuage their sufferings.
“Flood washed away my five heactres of farm, I could not sleep and eat when it happened”, he said.
He also appealed to the Federal Government to assist them and also repair their road from Ladin Makole to Larabar Gadon Sarki Warawa Local Government.
