Lokoja, Oct. 15, 2024 (TheGavel) — The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) Chairman, Mr. Mamman Nda-Eri, has confirmed that preparations are in place for the upcoming Local Government elections scheduled for October 19.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja, Nda-Eri assured that the council poll would be peaceful, free, and fair.
He revealed that 7,016 ad-hoc staff have been trained to manage the 3,508 polling units across 239 wards in the 21 local government areas of the state. Additionally, the distribution of non-sensitive election materials to polling units has begun.
Nda-Eri noted that 19 political parties would be participating in the elections, and the commission had printed their logos on ballot papers to prevent complaints or legal disputes.
“Although only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) have fielded candidates, the commission aims to ensure transparency,” he said.
He also mentioned that security measures have been put in place by the State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to guarantee a peaceful election.
According to Nda-Eri, results for councillors will be declared at the ward level, while chairmanship results will be announced at the council secretariats by the 21 returning officers.
“The commission will announce the winners after compiling results from all wards,” Nda-Eri added.
He encouraged the residents of Kogi State to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly during the elections. (NAN)
