Justice Oyindamola Ogala of an Ikeja High Court on Thursday remanded a 22-year-old labourer, Olanrewaju Opeyemi for allegedly robbing a commercial sex worker, Blessing Okoro of N2000,and causing her grievous harm by stabbing her severally at a Lagos hotel.

Opeyemi has no fixed address. He claimed to live under the bridge with his friends at Alakija area. He is a primary school drop out from Oyo town. On the other hand, Miss Okoro is a divorce mother of two children who “hustle” at Intendo Hotel, Agboju, Lagos. She claimed to be an hairdresser. She is from Benin, Edo State.

In the information filed before the court by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Opeyemi in the statement he made to the police told his story thus:

“I am from Oyo state. I only attended primary school at Oyo town. I came to Lagos state myself. I came to Lagos this year 2020. Actually, on the 14/08/2020 I went to one hotel and as I was passing by, one girl, a prostitute called me and held me on my hand and asked me to follow her to her room. And when I entered inside her room, she asked me if I have handset and I say no. She equally asked me if I asked account number and I say no. She asked me to undress, I also asked her to undress. That is when the evil spirit entered me and I brought out knife before I started stabbing her severally. Actually I thought she’s dead and I pushed her body under the bed. When I searched her bag, I only took #1,600 from her. I brought the money to station. I used to sleep with my friends under the bridge at Alakija. None of them was around during the incident”.

Miss Okoro’s statement also goes thus:

“I am Miss Blessing Okoro. I am a single(divorced) mother of 2 boys. I hail from Benin in Edo State. I live at Agboju area of Lagos state. Sometimes, I hustle at Intenso Hotel at Agboju area. I wish to state that on Thursday 14 of August 2020 at about 20:00hrs, I was at the said hotel when one boy approached me for a short rest at the rate of #1,500 and we both left for my room and on getting to the room, I was pulling my dress when the said boy suddenly held my head to the wall and started cutting me with a jack knife. And he was stronger than me. So, I was shouting and before people could come to my rescue, I had to pretend I’m dead. That was when people around the hotel came into my room and got him arrested and discovered he had already stole the sum of #2,000 from my table. That was how he was taken to Satellite Police division Amuwo Lagos”.

Justice Ogala remanded Opeyemi at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre following his plea of ‘not guilty’ to the three-count charge preferred against her which was interpreted to him from English Language to Yoruba Language.

He was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery and causing grievous harm.

According to the prosecution, led by Mrs A.O Oluwasanmi, the defendant committed the offence at 2am on April 14, 2020 at Intendo Hotel, Agboju, Lagos.

“Opeyemi alongside others who are at large, conspired to commit robbery and while armed with a knife, he robbed one Ms Blessing Okoro of N2,000.

“He also grievously harmed Okoro by cutting her with a knife and inflicted serious injuries on her.
