The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, has blamed parents for what he perceives as the moral decadence in the society.
During a public address to mark the new legal year at the Central Mosque, Lagos Island, the Chief Judge expressed his concerns regarding the deteriorating moral values and attributed a significant portion of the responsibility to poor parental guidance.
Justice Alogba emphasized that parents should take a more active role in imbibing good character and moral conduct in their children.
An Islamic cleric, Abdulgafar Mofesaye, advised judges and lawyers to steadfastly avoid corruption at all costs in the dispensation of justice.
He stressed that judges and lawyers had a moral obligation to uphold justice and fairness.
He emphasized that corruption not only undermined the integrity of the legal profession but eroded the very foundations of a just society.
Earlier in his opening remark, a community leader, Bashorun Alabi-Macfoy encouraged the judicial system to intensify its efforts in the fight against sexual and drug abuse.
Present the service were the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Alhaji Lawal Pedro SAN, Dr Kemi Pinheiro SAN, former Attorney General of Lagos State, Mr Adeniji Kazeem SAN, General Secretary, NBA, Mr Ade Adegbite, Justice Lateefat Okunnu, and many other dignitaries.
Meanwhile at the Church service, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, Rt. Rev Ifedola Senasu Gabriel Okupevi called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to rule with equity and also admonished judges to allow God fairness to show in their judgment.
He charged them not to deny or delay justice as he referred to the bible passage, Exodus 23: 1-9 red by Justice Olutoyin Ipaye, urged them to speak out for injustice.
He said, “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty.
“Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twist the words of the innocent.”
He noted that the Diocese appreciates what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing to revive the country’s economy. He noted that there is hunger in the land. Okupevi therefore charged them to make sure that justice is not delayed or denied.
