Jos, Oct. 9, 2024 (TheGavel) – Voting for the Local Government elections in Plateau State began in some areas of Jos on Wednesday, although delays were experienced due to the late arrival of election officials for the chairmanship and councillorship polls.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited polling units in Kugiya, Bukuru Lowcost, and Zang Commercial Secondary School reported that as of 8:45 a.m., officials of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) had yet to arrive in these areas. However, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Model School, officials were present as of the time of filing this report.

Despite the delays, voters were seen at various polling units waiting patiently to cast their votes. Mrs. Sabina Dawam, the official in charge of the polling unit at the Olusegun Obasanjo Model School in Hwolshe, attributed the delay to a lack of transportation for voting materials and personnel at the Local Government.

Some voters expressed frustration over the situation. Mr. Amos Badung, who was waiting to vote at the same location, said that as of 9:00 a.m., the election had not started, and he was concerned that the delay might result in some voters being disenfranchised.

Similarly, Mrs. Mary Dalyop, a voter at the St. Jarlarths Primary School 1 polling unit in Kugiya, said she had been waiting since 7:30 a.m. for the officials to arrive. She explained that she was reluctant to return home, fearing that she might miss her opportunity to vote.

In contrast, voting commenced early in other areas, including Zawan A and B, Kuru, Du, and Rayfield, all located in Jos South. In these areas, both officials and materials were in place by 8:00 a.m., allowing the electoral process to proceed smoothly. (NAN)
